Time Domain Measurement of Complex Permittivity and Complex Permeability of Materials.

Complex Permittivity and Complex Permeability measurements

Geozondas company has developed a system of measurement of Complex Permittivity and Complex Permeability of Materials in the 2 to 18 GHz frequency band. The concept of this measurement system is based on the measurement of reflection coefficient of the objects under investigation and on the calculation in their terms of the required values. The FFT transform is used to pass to Frequency Domain.

The reflection coefficient measurements are conducted in time domain using the Geozondas measurement system ZX-105. The sampling oscilloscope SD 018 produced by Zondas Ltd. is used for these measurements. That is a computer-based fully programmable two channels oscilloscope with frequency band to 18 GHz. A rise time 15 ps and small noise factor (r.m.s. is equal 1.7 mV) allows to use it in wide range time and frequency domains measurements. This system allows to measure a reflection coefficient from objects in near and in far field in the 2 to 18 GHz frequency band. A range of measuring of modulus of reflection coefficient from objects is the 0 to 35 dB and of phase - the 0 to 360°.

To measure complex permittivity and permeability four different methods are proposed. According to the first method the permittivity and permeability of materials are determined by measurement of reflection coefficient of two samples of different thickness with one-sided metallization and calculation in their terms of the required values. Similarly in the second method for this end are used the non-metallized samples.

According to the third method the permittivity and permeability of materials is calculated in terms of the measured reflection coefficients of two samples with the same thickness one of which has a one-sided metallization.

The fourth method is to determine the complex permittivity and permeability of non-magnetic materials. They are calculated in terms of measurement of a sample of certain thickness with one-sided metallization.

The different methods applied to the same materials give the similar results and each of them can be applied depending on a samples availability.

A proposed system allowes to measure a complex permittivity in range to 30 for real part, to 15 for imaginary part and to measure a complex permeability in range to 5 for real and imaginary part.

The measurement system is advanced to measure in frequency band from 2 to 8 GHz. For this purpose a new antennas are designed.
